Born in Andalusia, flamenco is an art form recognized by UNESCO’s World Intangible Cultural Heritage list. And after watching a flamenco show, it’s no surprise why. Centuries’ worth of stories come to life through baile (dance), toque (guitar music) and cante (song), a combination that is on full display at ‘We call it Flamenco’ in Buffalo.
On selected dates over the coming months, Forbes Theatre will be hosting this series of flamenco spectacles in Buffalo. Flamenco dancers, a guitarist and a singer will take to the stage to bring a slice of the art form to the city this season. Tickets are on sale now but spaces are limited, so grab your tickets while you can.
What is ‘We call it Flamenco’?
In recent years, flamenco has experienced somewhat of a renaissance, with artists including Rosalía and C. Tangana infusing traditional flamenco sounds with contemporary genres like pop and hip-hop. Now, ‘We call it Flamenco’ is taking the art form back to its roots by showcasing timeless flamenco variations known as palos. Wearing authentic trajes de flamenca (flamenco dresses) and mantones (manila shawls), flamenco dancers twist, twirl and stomp to the sounds of a guitarist and a traditional vocalist.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
So what exactly are palos? They’re distinct styles of flamenco that each have their own rhythm, structure and theme. There are over 50 palos in existence, and at this show, six palos will be performed amid a sea of roses.
From the cantiñas of Cadiz to the fandangos of Huelva, the palos performed on the evening are authentic flamenco variants that have sounded in tablaos (flamenco venues) for centuries. Over four acts, you’ll be immersed in the enchantment of the duende, a type of sensation people are said to only experience when watching a flamenco show.
