Canberra’s jazz scene started to gain prominence when a melodic modern jazz called ‘bop for the people’ began to reach the country by 1950. Across the world, the appeal of traditional jazz was slowly fading due to the surge of rock ‘n’ roll but there were still institutions devoted to keeping the groovy genre alive, such as the Canberra Jazz Club, established in 1957. Over time, the capital of Australia has continued to embrace jazz music in all its forms, with live performances like We call it Jazz Canberra providing a space for enthusiasts and musicians to share their passion for jazz.

Jazz, its history and the show
The history of jazz starts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Louisiana, where African-American communities blended African musical traditions with ragtime, blues and European musical elements. Through improvisation and syncopation, skilled musicians infused personal emotions and experiences into their performances, making each rendition unique. By the end of World War II, jazz spread across the world, symbolising freedom with soaring horns and silky piano notes.
