Long hailed as one of the most historic buildings in Eugene, First Christian Church of Eugene is the large white church situated on 1166 Oak Street. It’s a stunning example of neoclassical architecture in the city that’s stood proud in its place since the first cornerstone was set in 1911. Today, the church prides itself on inclusivity, hosting a congregation that welcomes all. Visitors can also enjoy the range of events that take place here including charity fundraisers and magical concerts by Candlelight.
Located in downtown Eugene, the church is a stone’s throw away from the city’s most popular spots including Eugene Public Library and the University of Oregon campus. The closest bus stop is situated just a 2-minute walk from the church on E/S of Oak S of 12th.

1. Ongoing expansions
When it was first built over 110 years ago, the church was adorned with Gothic style stained glass windows that portray biblical stories of Jesus and his disciples. In the early 1920s, plans to add a bell tower and Deagan chimes to the church were drawn up, and it was finally constructed in 1926. In 1980, the church went under some much-needed renovations, including a fresh paint job and the Estey Pipe Organ was re-serviced.
2. Funding
Despite its history and beauty, the church isn’t on the National Register of Historic Places. That’s because the congregation actually declined to have their building placed on the list despite the fact that being on the register would make the church eligible for extra funding. In 1994, a Permanent Building Fund was established to help finance repairs and maintenance to the historical treasure.
3. A congregation open to all
The church’s congregation describe themselves as “open and affirming”, and encourage anyone and everyone to join their mass regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or ethnicity. Their congregation currently welcomes a diverse group of 500 people from all works of life and continue to receive anyone hoping to join.

What else can you do at First Christian Church of Eugene?
The church runs a Helping Hearts charity program where members of the public can donate clothes to people in need. Visitors are encouraged to bring items of clothing including gloves, coats, sweats, shoes, new underwear and socks as well as blankets every Tuesday and Thursday from 12pm to 2pm at the back entrance of the church.
