From a bird flying overhead’s perspective, Temppeliaukio Church is like a giant eyeball glaring back. The Lutheran church was the winning design at an architectural competition in 1961. Two brothers, Timo, and Tuomo Suomalainen are responsible for the striking structure in Helsinki. While the church itself remains active, tourists are drawn to the square to admire the originality of the famous Church of the Rock.
Only a 10-minute walk from the mighty Kamppi shopping centre in the heart of the city, this church welcomed over 900,000 visitors and hosted 400 concerts in 2019. The main entrance can be found at Lutherinkatu 3.
Did you know that Temppeliaukio Church…
1. Has a roof with a diameter of 24 metres
Not hard to miss, and one of the most extraordinary features of this church, is the impressive dome ceiling rising from its rugged granite nest. The dome is supported by 180 window panes and concrete beams which vary in size in response to the unevenly shaped rock.
2. Was part of a bigger goal
After two competitions, one in 1933 and another in 1936, the third finally proved successful thanks to Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen’s design. However, the real challenge of the competition was of course its goal which was to “include the organization plan for the whole Temppeliaukio Square, taking into attention that as great part as possible of the rock outcrop of the square to be preserved.” And the two brothers certainly succeeded in preserving the integrity of the rock.
3. Is a concert venue
Unsurprisingly, the Church of the Rock is the perfect setting for concerts thanks to its excellent acoustics. Performances at Temppeliaukio Chuch are varied and once included enchanting tributes by the popular Candlelight series.
