Few other musical art forms possess both the history and magic that flamenco does. Born in Andalusia, flamenco embodies the heart and soul of the Spanish region as well as the communities that have claimed it as their own over the last few centuries. This season, “We Call It Flamenco” is coming to Helsinki to celebrate the passion and charm of the treasured dance, fusing mesmerising dance performances with the authentic sounds of traditional flamenco songs.
Adorned by thousands of roses, Aleksanterin Teatteri will be providing the magnificent setting for this series of spellbinding flamenco shows. Audiences will be immersed in the dazzling movements and impassioned sounds of the Spanish art form as the duende (flamenco magic) takes over them. Tickets are on sale now and spaces are limited, so make sure you get yours before they sell out!
What is “We Call It Flamenco”?
“We Call It Flamenco” is an enchanting spectacle of Spanish music and dance spread out across four acts. By combining cante (singing), baile (dance) and toque (music), the show presents authentic flamenco performances that audiences expect to experience in the rustic tablaos (flamenco venues) of Andalusia. Flamenco dancers dressed in traditional mantones (manila shawls) and trajes de flamenca (flamenco dresses) stomp and twirl to the engrossing rhythms of a guitar and profound sounds of professional flamenco singers.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
There are over 50 variants of flamenco known as palos. Each palo has its own unique style and feeling that it expresses. They also each have their own musical influences, including traditional Andalusian folk songs, Arabic melodies, African rhythms and more.
At “We Call It Flamenco” in Helsinki, the show celebrates six of the famous palos that have dazzled audiences for hundreds of years: the fandango, bulería, zambra, soleá por bulerías, tango and cantiña. From the traditional tablaos of Sevilla to the vibrant streets of Jerez de la Frontera, prepare to be transported to magnificent flamenco settings in Andalusia as you experience the magic of the art form right here in Helsinki.
