While Kingston doesn’t have a major resident professional ballet company yet, dance studios like 5678 Dance Studio and Kingston School of Dance are nurturing the next generation of ballet performers. Now, a shimmering new production is taking that passion centre stage: Ballet of Lights Kingston. Inside Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, professional ballerinas in costumes fitted with fibre-optic lights reimagine fairytales like Sleeping Beauty with every luminous pirouette.
Ballet of Lights in Kingston: Which story is being performed now?
Sleeping Beauty
Born from a centuries-old European fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty is a story about time, patience, and the quiet power of hope. Its magic lies in the pause between curse and awakening, where love, fate, and resilience intertwine. A reminder that even long silences can hold promise.
What is Ballet of Lights?
There’s something mesmerising about seeing light and movement merge into a single language. With just five or six dancers, the production replaces grandeur with intimacy—every lift, leap, and turn amplified by costumes woven with light. The result is an abridged yet profoundly expressive performance, where technology doesn’t overpower artistry but extends its reach, illuminating gestures and emotions once hidden in shadow. Through its shimmering visuals and storytelling finesse, the experience bridges ballet’s rich heritage with a more curious, modern audience.
On selected dates over the coming months, Ballet of Lights is shining inside Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis within each zone, so we recommend you arrive early.
