Ballet of Lights in Limerick: Which story is being performed now?
Sleeping Beauty
This timeless story has deep roots, beginning with the French narrative Perceforest (1330–1344), followed by the Catalan poem ‘Frayre de Joy e Sor de Paser’. Charles Perrault’s The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood and the Brothers Grimm’s Little Briar Rose carried the tale into popular imagination, while Robinson Planché and Richard Doyle’s 1865 version solidified it for generations.
A dreamlike and fantastical story, Sleeping Beauty has long been a favorite for ballet adaptations, with Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, op. 66 (1889) providing some of the most iconic music ever written for the stage.
