When we eat, our eyes usually get first dibs on the delicious meal before any other sense. We judge the food by the ingredients and colours we can see before our taste buds get the chance to make up their own mind. At Dining in the Dark, privileged eyes take a back seat to give other senses a go at indulging in the flavourful food first. When our eyes are covered, our other senses are heightened as they work overtime to distinguish between the food’s heavenly tastes, smells and textures, and this in turn elevates the dining experience to new and exciting heights.
This season, fearless foodies will be experiencing an awakening of the senses at Subo – Newcastle’s only GFG hatted restaurant. While completely blindfolded, diners will eagerly await a surprise three-course meal as expert chefs cook up a storm inside this fine contemporary bistro. Taste buds will be enveloped by mouth-watering flavours as they try their best to determine the top-notch ingredients included in these three delicious dishes.
What to expect at Dining in the Dark
The theory is that, by temporarily eliminating our sight, our senses of smell and taste are strengthened. Delightful flavours taste more powerful and fragrant scents become even stronger. Once you slip on your blindfold, the rest of the world is blocked out, letting you fully focus on the deliciousness of your meal without any unwanted distractions.
Over the course of 90 minutes, adventurous epicureans will unlock the full potential of their taste buds while indulging in delectable vegetarian, seafood or meat dishes. While sat in complete darkness, diners will guess their way through a surprise three-course menu with only their taste buds and sense of smell to guide them.
Ever the champions of dining differently, Dining in the Dark encourages intrepid gastronomes to break the rules and get creative when eating. You could enjoy tasty temptations, surprise delights and melt-in-your-mouth classics with a knife and fork, or use your hands to get up close and personal with the tantalising ingredients on your plate. The only real rule here is try not to peek!
