Born in the early 90s, neo-soul is a fusion of R&B, jazz, hip-hop and soul. Artists like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo are regarded as the founders of neo-soul, but the genre is ever-changing, with new kids on the block like Frank Ocean and SZA putting their own spin to the musical style. This season, this Candlelight neo-soul tribute in Orange County will explore the evolution of the genre with the help of the sensational string quartet Orchid Quartet and a sea of flickering candles.
Illuminated by candlelight, The Colony House will be hosting this spellbinding neo-soul tribute concert. Prepare to hear songs such as “Ex-Factor”, “Tyrone” and “Thinkin Bout You” performed on strings in an utterly serene candlelit setting and experience this beloved genre in a whole new light.
Candlelight Tribute to Neo-Soul Favorites
Since its inception, neo-soul has favored laid-back arrangements over hard-hitting beats. From the sultry sounds of D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and Sade’s “Smooth Operator” to the velvety melodies of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” and H.E.R.’s “The Best Part”, these songs transport listeners to an oasis of calm and can often be found at the top of Spotify’s chill playlists.
This season, groovy tunes like “Adorn” and “Redbone”, timeless classics like “You Don’t Know My Name” and “The End of the Road” and many more neo-soul favorites will be performed by Orchid Quartet at this Candlelight tribute. Performed on strings, these iconic hits take on a new life and give fans of the genre the chance to hear some of their favorite songs like never before.
Not only does this Candlelight neo-soul tribute pay homage to the visionaries that paved the way, but it also honors contemporary artists that continue to push the boundaries of the genre. As a sea of candles flickers away, you’ll hear how a string quartet works their magic on timeless neo-soul hits from both the past and present, making for a musical tribute that celebrates the history and evolution of this treasured genre.
There’ll be two concerts on the night, with the first starting at 6:30pm and the later one at 9pm. Each concert takes place over the course of 60 minutes and doors open 45 minutes prior to the concert start time.
