Over a century ago, “tango criollo” (Creole tango) was discovered and danced along the La Plata basin. Since then, dance partners in Buenos Aires bars have been locked in step, spinning and twirling around each other while the bandoneón, a kind of concertina, plays. And now, We Call It Tango is recreating the celebrated dance in Southampton with all of the sensual overtones and seductive movements of the unspoken language taking center stage.
This captivating show recounts a romantic tale while showcasing an emblematic part of Argentinian cultural history. Taking place on select dates over the coming months, places are limited for We Call It Tango. So, don’t miss the chance to experience the emotional intensity of tango and its portrayal of love and longing.
What is “We Call It Tango”?
It is an Argentine dance show performed by professional dancers and skilled musicians. The phrase “it takes two to tango” certainly isn’t lost on the directors and choreographers behind this production. Across three acts and thirteen tangos, two dancers will lock eyes and share the responsibility of doing each one justice. Meanwhile, two virtuosos will provide the haunting and mournful music on the piano and bandoneón.
Tango, its music, and the show
Entwined in the life of Amelia and her love affair, the show features nostalgic pieces by maestro Astor Piazzolla, Osvaldo Fresedo’s melancholic “Vida Mia”, Juan D’arienzo’s “Milonga, Viega Milonga”, and other famed tango music. Fall for the dancers’ footplay, leg brushes, and twists coupled with rhythmic melodies and lively instrumentals. In other words, see the heart and soul of the tango exposed, and journey to its impoverished origins rich in passion.

Once the dance arrived overseas in the early 19th century, it immediately became a sensation in Paris, London, and Berlin.
