Candlelight: The Best of Zelda
The Zelda saga has transcended generations and become a pop culture classic. Besides the likable characters and the heroic tasks, the video game is well known for its simple yet expressive soundtrack. The composer of the original games, Japanese legend Koji Kondo used influences of world music, folk, medieval and 20th century classical music to create intricate and lyrical melodies. Inspired by the Kyoto countryside, he composed music that often triggers upcoming events, marking the use of music as a heuristic mechanism in gameplay.
It’s not just Ocarina of Time that uses musical instruments for the completion of tasks. Other games have have incorporated this feature, where you input musical notes in order to solve puzzles and access new areas. Celebrate Zelda’s rich music by listening to the themes of The Legend of Zelda (1986), A Link to the Past (1991), Ocarina of Time (1998), among others, played by the talented DIVISI’s Amp’d String Quartet.
