What is We Call It Flamenco?
We Call It Flamenco is an authentic four-act Spanish flamenco show, featuring some of the most beloved styles. It is meant to showcase the very best of the art form, incorporating soulful music, the use of the palmas (hand clapping) and the Spanish guitar, as well as intricate dance moves performed by top-tier bailaoras (dancers). As they stomp their feet and gracefully move across the stage, they’ll be wearing the traditional traje de flamenca (flamenco dresses), adorned with embroidered mantones (Manila shawls), bringing you a slice of Spain right here in the city.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
Although the exact origins of flamenco cannot be traced, it is believed that the passionate art form was shaped by a blend of cultures from marginalized communities in Spain, namely Roma Gypsy, Jewish and Andalusian. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that the complex art form was popularized across the world and soon became a symbol of Spanish culture and identity.
At We Call It Flamenco, you can expect to see six palos (different styles), starting with the mother of flamenco dances, the fandango de Huelva, and followed by zambra, soleá por bulerías, tangos, cantiñas and lastly, bulería. Each palo conveys a distinct story and feeling, taking audiences on a sensational emotional journey.
If you’ve always wanted to see a flamenco tablao firsthand, now you don’t have to travel all the way to Spain to experience the raw artistry of one of the world’s most beloved art forms. We Call It Flamenco is offering Winnipeggers the chance to enjoy an authentic Andalusian flamenco show at the iconic Winnipeg Art Gallery.
There are two back-to-back performances scheduled for 6 pm and 9 pm. Doors open 30 minutes before the start of the show so make sure you get there on time so as not to miss the show’s intricate rhythms and intense emotions.
